15: Seeking Solstice“I hate the cold,” Cale said suddenly, breaking a prolonged silence.   
 Cricket giggled, “Then what the hell are you doing here?”   
 Cale laughed, “I don’t know. I never could figure out why I never migrated south. Old habits I guess. They really do die hard.”   
 “Well, you’ve got to be freezing out here.”   
 “No, I’m not. I mean, all I feel anymore is cold, so I’m pretty used to it. That’s been the hardest thing about turning; the constant, bone-chilling, goddamn, freeze-your-ass-off cold. It’s incessant 15: Seeking Solstice

14: Judgement“Of course, it was pouring down rain when I stormed out of the cabin and I was freezing ‘cause I hadn’t stopped to change out of my PJs, but I just walked straight to the highway and started walking up the road, hoping  was going in the right direction. It was about an hour later, just as I hit the point where you shivering so violently, you feel like you’re rattling your brain stem loose, that a car pulled up next to me. He told me to get in and he’d take me home, but I was so angry! I started screaming at him in the middle of the road.”

13: Running Away“So…what did you do?” Cricket asked, breaking the silence when she was ready.   
 “I didn’t know what do to. I didn’t know where I was going or how to survive. I just knew that I had to. So I started feeding off of homeless people and drunks; anyone who wouldn’t remember it or wouldn’t seem credible while they filed a police report. I just took what I needed, never killed anyone.”   
 Cricket shifted uncomfortably, but after a moment of thought, she decided that that was the best way to go about it if your survival depended on it.

12: Dead Wrong“I really thought I was in love with this guy,” Cricket mumbled, her voice shuddering slightly. Cale held his breath, not sure what he would do if she started to cry.   
 “He took me out to this cabin and it was absolutely beautiful, like chimney stove and everything kind of classic pretty. Then he pulled out his camera and took a picture of me and in it I was smiling really big, Cale.”  Cale smiled in spite of himself.
